The Gym Below Three Floors of Flats
The lease was signed before anyone had thought carefully about the three floors of flats sitting directly above. Within a month of opening the complaints were weekly, and they were reasonable: a barbell dropped at six in the morning does not reach the flat above as a distant thud from downstairs, it arrives as a bang through the slab. The gym was heading toward a choice between banning deadlifts and losing the lease.
So the first drawings were not about mirrors or branding. The lifting zone sits on a floating platform: rubber crumb over ply over isolation pads, decoupled from the structural slab so an impact never travels into the building directly. Everything else followed that decision: equipment zoned by how much noise it makes, the cardio floor kept nearest the residential wall because treadmills are quiet, and an acoustic ceiling over the platforms rather than across the whole floor, where it would have been decoration. It is now the only commercial tenant in the building that nobody upstairs complains about.
