A House Two Dogs Also Live In
Two large dogs, a beach five minutes' walk away, and a glossy vitrified floor that had been selected before either of those was a consideration. It scratched, it showed every paw print, and it was genuinely dangerous when wet, which with two dogs coming back from the sea most evenings was often.
The floor is now a textured vitrified tile with real grip when wet and enough surface pattern that a scratch has nowhere to announce itself. Upholstery moved to a tight-weave performance fabric that fur lifts off rather than beds into, rugs are washable and sized to go in a domestic machine, and there is a shallow wash-down zone just inside the door with a drain, so the sand stops there instead of travelling through the house.
